Medical futility and non-beneficial interventions get a lot of discussion in the end-of-life context.  But the problems are not limited to that end-of-life procedures.  

In a recent issue of the American Journal of Managed Care, researchers report that PCPs commonly acquiesce to patient requests for unnecessary medical services.  And they get at least 1 such request per week.
