More Americans Are Dying Out of Hospital

By some measures, end of life care in the United States is improving, according to a new robust JAMA study by Joan Teno and colleagues.

Patients who died in an acute care hospital
2000  33%
2015  20%

Deaths in a home or community setting
2000  31% 
2015  40% 

Patients who had three or more hospitalizations in their last 90 days of life
2000  11%
2015  7%

Patients who spent part of their final four days on a ventilator fell 
2000  3.1% 
2015  2.6%
