Newspaper headlines around the world provocatively ask: “Can Dead Brains Come Back to Life?” (Toronto Star). Even the Wall Street Journal reports: “Scientists Restore Some Brain Function After Death.”
Commentaries in Nature, this week, suggest that “people who are declared brain dead (especially those with brain injuries resulting from a lack of oxygen) could become candidates for brain resuscitation rather than organ donation.” These people might even regain consciousness as the “science of brain resuscitation progresses.”
This widely reported study will surely further fuel public mistrust in the determination of death by neurological criteria.
