Because death determined by neurological criteria is such a difficult diagnosis to understand and accept, it is important that the educational effort be extraordinary. Fortunately, professional societies and other organizations are developing more educational materials.
Perhaps most notable is the Brain Death Toolkit by the Neurocritical Care Society. The following video by Donor Network West (the OPO for Northern California and Nevada) is also good. In five minutes, Alan Yee, a neurologist at Sutter’s California Pacific Medical Center, explains how brain death can occur using animation, and why it’s different from a coma or vegetative state.
