81-year-old Sonny Schuldt was vacationing in Sicily when he suffered a heart attack and stroke. While he had a Do Not Resuscitate order, Italy does not honor DNR orders. Schuldt is now in a medically-induced coma and his family is trying to transport him home.


While Italian law may not require clinicians to honor DNR orders, US law does. Increasingly, facilities and clinicians are sanctioned when they fail to honor patients’ advance directives, POLSTs, and DNR orders.
