POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Assistant Professor
Assistant Director of Clinical Ethics Consultation: The Center for Biomedical Ethics and Society at Vanderbilt University is seeking a person with experience in Clinical Ethics Consultation at the Assistant Professor level. The candidate should have experience in clinical ethics consultation and should have experience teaching both graduate and undergraduate students.
PROFESSIONAL & PERSONAL QUALIFICATIONS
Advanced training in bioethics as demonstrated by a relevant doctoral degree or by a clinical degree along with graduate level training at the master or fellowship level
Demonstrated potential for scholarly activity
Experience and demonstrated skill teaching within medical settings
Experience leading clinical ethics consults
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Ability to collaborate effectively with existing faculty
Ability to build consensus with interdisciplinary health care teams
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Approximately 50% effort will be devoted to research and teaching as a member of the Center
Conduct research and engage in scholarly activity in bioethics
Teach graduate courses in Clinical Ethics and Biomedical Ethics, as well as undergraduate courses, likely one course each semester.
50% effort will be devoted to assisting to promote the Clinical Ethics Consultation Service and to participate in Clinical Ethics Consultation.
Assist in clinical ethics education throughout the hospital, including case conferences with physicians, nurses, and students
Service on relevant college and medical center committees
The Center for Biomedical Ethics and Society engages in service, research, and teaching. The Clinical Ethics Consult service has a long tradition of engaging in clinical ethics consultation and education with the Vanderbilt University Hospital and the Monroe Carell, Jr., Childrens Hospital at Vanderbilt. In addition, every member of the Center is engaged in critical research at the intersection of biomedical science and society. The Center has special strengths in questions related to religion and medical science. The Center is also engaged in graduate, undergraduate, medical student, and resident education. Graduate students from the Departments of Religious Studies, Philosophy, and Sociology have worked closely with the Center, as have students from the Divinity School. Members of the Center also provide teaching to undergraduates in the Center for Medicine, Health, and Society, which has an undergraduate major.
