Abstract:

In this talk, Dr. Hussein will share some insights on and personal experiences with two basic questions: Is there such thing as Islamic Bioethics? If it exists, and how to apply it?

Through this journey, he will explore how the western approaches to bioethics seem to differ from our socio-cultural mindsets and our inherited religious-based approaches to telling right from wrong and good from bad. Next, he will explain how he found the ‘missing link’ between the two approaches and how we (as Muslim healthcare practitioners or as practitioners in a Muslim country) can practically present and use our version of ethical analysis. Then, he will briefly explore the concepts of ‘Goals of Shariya’ and ‘Fiqhi Principles’ as tools of ethical analysis and explain how he used them in teaching medical ethics to Saudi undergraduate medical students. Finally, he will highlight the key challenges that the field of Islamic bioethics face in KSA and worldwide.
