DETAILS:
The Department of Medical Humanities & Bioethics in the College of Medicine at University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) seeks dedicated, energetic applicants who wish to join our growing team as a full time, tenure-track faculty member at the level of Assistant Professor. While an applicant should be prepared to fulfill all four of the core missions of an academic medical center (education, clinical & research service, scholarship, and administrative service/leadership), we are particularly keen to find someone with an interest in research ethics, while having facility with clinical ethics consultations at both an adult and children’s hospital. Applicants should demonstrate clear interest and experience in ethics and humanities education across a variety of populations including undergraduate healthcare professional students, graduate medical trainees (house staff), clinical staff and faculty. Applicants also should demonstrate capacity for successful and meaningful scholarship related to the fields of ethics and humanities. Candidates who demonstrate the possibility of securing extra-mural funding (as a PI, co-I or consultant) will be considered favorably; however, this position is based on a “hard-money” salary. Experience, knowledge and interest in research ethics are useful additions to the portfolio. Originally established as freestanding Division in the UAMS College of Medicine in 1982, the Department of Medical Humanities & Bioethics (http://humanities.uams.edu) currently provides ethics education, consultation and other support throughout the institution and its affiliated partners, including Arkansas Children’s Hospital. The Department is particularly proud of its many offerings by nationally recognized faculty in a broad range of medical humanities, including literature, art, and law. Also, the university has several initiatives in neuroscience, data warehouse and bioinformatics, as well as personalized medicine that all require careful ethical and humanities considerations. These and other initiatives provide vast opportunities for bioethics and humanities scholars to participate in substantive, meaningful work. Referred to as a “well-kept secret,” Little Rock (the #1 small-to-medium sized city to live in the US according to Kiplinger Magazine in 2013) offers a rare balance of comfortable living, world-class arts and cultural events in the city, and easy access to Arkansas’ vast array of outdoor activities. Several vibrant neighborhoods in the city center balance historic southern charm with contemporary comfort. A short drive from downtown, city scenery gives way to the hills and valleys of Central Arkansas. Home to a thriving urban farming and local food movement, Little Rock was named one of five “Secret Foodie Cities” in the U.S. by Forbes Travel Guide in 2014. Little Rock fosters national and international cultural, academic and professional development as home several public and private universities/colleges including the Clinton School of Public Service, the UALR Bowen School of Law, as well as the numerous colleges of UAMS (including health professions, nursing, pharmacy, and public health). Applicants must have a terminal degree in a humanities discipline, law, medicine, nursing, or other health profession, with a focus on or experience in bioethics/medical humanities. Salary will be commensurate with junior-rank and relevant experience, following the AAMC’s national medical school salary survey for PhDs in bioethics. Review of applications begins immediately and will continue until position is filled. However, UAMS is on a hiring freeze; so, no job offers can be made until that freeze is lifted. To apply, an applicant should send through email a cover letter, CV, three letters of recommendations, and a sample of scholarship to: D. Micah Hester.
