The Bioethicist provides clinical ethics and research ethics consultation, monitors patients’ rights for accreditation and quality improvement purposes, provides clinical ethics and research ethics education to staff, organizes multi-disciplinary rounds and conferences and serves as a resource for staff, patients and families. As well, the Bioethicist will chair the Clinical Ethics committee(s) and serve on the Research and Organizational Ethics Committees. The Bioethicist will work closely with the Chief Medical and Academic Officer and Vice President for Quality and Safety to create policies required to insure that the organization’s functions are ethically compatible with Renown’s mission and values.

Nature and Scope:
The Bioethicist performs clinical, organizational, and analytical functions within the Renown Health Ethics Program (REP), including but not limited to: clinical, research, and institutional ethics services, grant and report writing, quality improvement activities and special projects.
Principal Responsibilities
1. Provide clinical ethics consultation and advise on inquiries regarding clinical ethics cases, including investigating facts, interviewing relevant stakeholders, analyzing ethical issues, interviewing patients as appropriate, writing summaries and notes for the committee and an entry in the medical record.
2. Create and deliver new initiatives in research ethics in collaboration with Director and affiliated staff. This includes participating in research ethics consultation, outreach to multidisciplinary staff members, and collaboration with other departments including research staff and research compliance.
3. Provide ethics consultation and advice on inquiries regarding organizational ethics issues. These consults involve independent investigation, research, interviews with relevant stakeholders and collaboration with colleagues in other departments to propose appropriate recommendations or to draft relevant policies to address such issues.
4. Plan, market and facilitate Schwartz Center Rounds for the hospital and maintain relationship with the Schwartz Center for Compassionate Healthcare.
5. Create and lead an educational curriculum for members of the various ethics committees, the medical and other Renown Health staff, and the Renown lay community. Responsibilities include reporting on educational programs as well as clinical, research and institutional ethics issues each quarter.
6. Create an annual report to the Renown Health Board of Directors detailing the work of the REP.
7. Take the lead on special projects or initiatives for the REP by organizing and participating in subcommittees as needed. This includes responsibilities for collaborating with various stakeholders to identify the scope of the initiative, to create a plan for the initiative and to help implement new changes/programs as needed. This also includes assisting with policy changes where needed.
8. Develop and implement specific quality improvement projects as identified and assigned, such as managing and completing audits, surveys and education needed to fulfill responsibilities for the patient rights subchapter of the Periodic Performance Review and other Renown Health programmatic initiatives.
9. Plan, develop, deliver and evaluate educational programs related to clinical ethics, research ethics and medical education at Renown Health in collaboration with the CMAO, VP for Quality and affiliated staff.
10. Organize multidisciplinary ethics rounds (e.g., grand rounds), joint ethics rounds on campus, and conferences in collaboration with the CMAO, VP for Quality and affiliated staff.
11. Develop collaborative scholarly activities in ethics and contribute to the literature.
Perform all other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of Renown Health.

Minimum Qualifications: Requirements – Required and/or Preferred
Education:
Master’s Degree (MA) in Bioethics or other related field required. Terminal degree also required with Doctorate preferred. Completion of a clinical ethics fellowship or internship in a healthcare organization with supervised work in a clinical ethics role required or equivalent experience.
Experience:
Prior experience with a comprehensive understanding of applied clinical ethics, preferably in a health care setting with experience in ethics consultation, teaching and/or policy development. Previous service on an ethics committee required. Previous service on an ethics committee required. Prior experience teaching and consulting in research ethics preferred. Three to five years’ experience working in a clinical healthcare environment required.
