Principle Responsibilities

-Clinical Ethics Consultation.
-Conducts ethics consultations and discerns the most appropriate consultation method (individual or team).
-Gathers information from involved parties (listen, identify and highlight under-represented perspectives) and identifies and clarifies ethical questions.
-Facilitates communication; conveys respect and empathy in emotionally charged situations.
-Provides the clinical team with a range of ethical options.
-Provides ethical analysis, evidence, and clinically relevant recommendations.
-Collaborates with multiple functions across the system.
-Participates in clinical rounds and other activities on units proactively addressing ethical issues.
-Participates in quality improvement initiatives or research projects as necessary.
-Ethics Consultation Program.
-Responsible for scheduling 24 hour coverage for consult service and manages on-call schedule.
-Leads the multi-disciplinary ethics consultation team, and develops and mentors team members.
-Communicates with stakeholders the program’s observed trends, system issues and program activities.
-Analyzes, evaluates and improves consultation methods and processes.
-Reviews and contributes to development of relevant policies.
-With the program coordinator, manages ethics consultation database and data integrity.
Ethics Education.
-Provides orientation and ongoing competencies for consult team members.
-Instructs and mentors clinicians and trainees in clinical ethics.
-Collaborates with education specialists to develop ethics education curriculum for academic ethics programs.
-Contributes to CME/CEU course development and provides content related to ethics.
-Presents at conferences regionally and nationally.
-Provides or facilitates ethics education to system staff.
-Ethics Policy Development.
-Participates in the development or redevelopment of relevant hospital policies.
-Participates in the system-wide Ethics Council.
-Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

-Master’s degree in medicine, nursing, social work, law or related field required
-Doctoral/Ph.D. level advanced degree in ethics or related field, MD or JD preferred
-1-3 years of substantive clinical ethics consultation experience required
-Healthcare Ethics Consultant-Certified by American Society of Bioethics and Humanities upon hire required
