Lenox Hill Hospital

New York, New York, United States

Barrie J. Huberman, PhD, Director of Clinical Ethics

The Clinical Ethics Program at Lenox Hill Hospital is growing.  We are in search of a qualified individual to function as a full-time clinical ethicist for a major teaching hospital on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.  The successful candidate will join an established, busy clinical ethics consultation service responding to individual and organizational cases and issues.  Duties will also include assisting the Director of Clinical Ethics in leadership of the institutional ethics committee, the development and implementation of bioethics curricula for the full range of clinical trainees across disciplines and levels, development and implementation of methods to study and improve consultation processes, and work on ethics related policy and program development across the institution.  The ideal candidate will be capable of advancing scholarship in the field by contributing to the literature in his/her area of interest.  The successful candidate will also be prepared to assist the Director of Clinical Ethics to advance the integrated ethics approach utilized here, in which ethics quality gaps are identified and addressed collaboratively to improve processes institution-wide.

The Program in Clinical Ethics at Lenox Hill Hospital utilizes both consultation and mediation approaches to its work.  You will be called upon to address a wide range of issues in which value-laden dilemmas arise in the acute hospital setting.  These will commonly include shared decision-making at the end of life, decision-making for the patient without capacity and without surrogate, cultural variations in health care decision-making, mediation of disputes or disagreements to various parties to a case, research ethics questions and institutional approaches to value-laden matters.  You will be called upon to work thoughtfully with colleagues who may have varying perspectives on a situation as well as patients and their loved ones working through uniquely difficult life experiences.

Qualified candidates will have a relevant doctorate or advanced professional degree (PhD, MD, nursing, social work, JD or other related field) as well as clinical ethics training and experience.  The ideal candidate will have completed a certificate program and/or fellowship program in bioethics with prior experience conducting clinical ethics consultations at the bedside in an acute hospital setting.  Strong analytic skills and leadership skills are very important; strong interpersonal skills are essential (verbal and written). Of utmost importance, the successful candidate must be a wonderful colleague, a team player and demonstrate the highest standards of professionalism.  This position reports to the Director of Clinical Ethics, Lenox Hill Hospital, part of the North Shore-LIJ Health System.  Salary and benefits package is highly competitive.  For immediate consideration, please email your Curriculum Vitae and statement of interest to:  Barrie J.
