Full Time Clinical Ethicist Positions

Beaumont Health seeks to fill one of the following two full time corporate positions. Only one of the positions will be filled. The position will remain open until filled.

Positions: Clinical Ethicist or a Clinical Ethics Fellow. Desired starting date is July, 2017. Position is based in Dearborn, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit.

Overview: Candidates for the Clinical Ethicist position should be established clinical ethics case consultants with at least 100 live case consult experiences in an acute care setting in the past five years. This position is a permanent, annual renewable contract with full benefits package including employer match retirement and highly competitive salary. Support for professional conferences and advanced training also is provided.

JOB DUTIES
Clinical Ethics
• Provide expert ethics analysis on case consultations via web portal.
• Serve as training faculty for BH system ethics consultants.
• Contribute to strategic development of high quality ethics consultation standards, practices and procedures throughout all BH service sites.

Organizational Ethics
• Co-direct with a physician leader all clinical ethics services within Beaumont Health.
• Participate in review, revision, and developing new clinical ethics policies.
• Conduct ethical analyses on special topics as requested by Beaumont offices and programs.

Administration
• Serve on Corporate Council on Clinical Ethics
• Serve as acting Council Secretary in absence of the permanent Secretary
• Support strategic development of high quality, system wide initiative in Advance Care Planning

Education
• Participate in clinical ethics teaching to staff, faculty, and trainees. The duties involve regular episodic teaching but no term length course teaching responsibilities.
• Serve as professional ethics resource for administration, clinical and research leadership, and identified community outreach.

Research
• Conduct ongoing evaluation and research on quality metrics for ethics consultation services.
• Share service as ethics advisor to the corporate IRB. Mandatory IRB training is required.

REQUIREMENTS
• Terminal degree (MD, JD, PhD, DPN, or equivalent) in a field relevant to clinical ethics consultation. Masters trained applicants (MA, MSN, MSW, etc.) with extensive clinical ethics consultation experience also will be considered.
• Advanced graduate program studies, fellowship in Bioethics/Clinical Ethics, or equivalent.
• 100 live case experiences in hospital based clinical ethics consultation.
• Demonstrated superior clinical ethics teaching to health professionals and students.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated leadership, innovative strategic thinking, and time management skills.
• Commitment to integrate BH mission, vision and values into all professional work.
Functional Skills
• Facility with MS Office programs including Excel or equivalent spreadsheet functions.
• Facility with Outlook or equivalent email programs including calendar and other functionality.
• Skills developing multimedia education and training presentations for web based access.
• Ability to maneuver MS SharePoint within six months of hire.
• This position will based out of BH-Dearborn

Candidates for the Clinical Ethics Fellow position are the same as the Clinical Ethicist position without the extensive case consultation or direct teaching experiences. Relevant training must include formal study in the history of clinical ethics, ethical theory, sociology of medical ethics, and some formal classroom teaching experience. Applicants currently enrolled in bioethics MA or PhD graduate studies programs must have a 2017 program completion date.

• Salary for the Clinical Ethics Fellow position salary is 50% of the FT Clinical Ethicist position.
• The Clinical Ethics Fellow position is non-renewable.
• It is anticipated that if the Fellow position is filled the candidate may qualify for appointment to the Clinical Ethicist position after satisfactorily completing supervised case consulting experience.
