The Clinical Ethics Center for Memorial Medical Center, a busy and well-integrated clinical ethics center, has an immediate opening for a Clinical Ethicist. Memorial Medical Center (a tertiary level 500 bed academic medical center) is the flagship for a diverse network of healthcare institutions. The Ethics consultation service performs over 500 consults per year. The hospital is located in Springfield Illinois - the state capital - and is affiliated with Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to providing patient centered care, previous clinical work experience, an enthusiasm for doing high quality ethics consultation, experience with electronic health record, chart note writing, consult documentation, and moral problem solving. Ability to deal with sensitive and emotionally charged issues in a confidential and professional manner is required. Candidate should have skills necessary to establish cooperative relations with the patients, families, and health professionals contacted in the course of performing consultative work. Applicants should have demonstrated ability to mediate conflict and effectively negotiate. Primary duty is ethics consultation using the individual consultant model. Additional responsibilities include formal/informal education of nurses, medical students and resident physicians; community outreach; participation in various hospital committees, policy development and review and supporting the ethics programs of our affiliate hospitals. Applicants should have excellent oral/written communication skills, be capable of scholarly work, including research in clinical ethics.
Terminal degree or candidacy for such (i.e. Ph.D. in ethics, bioethics, philosophy, theology or related field), J.D., M.D. Must demonstrate competence in clinical ethics (i.e. certificate, M.A. or other equivalent post graduate education in ethics). Advanced experience in a clinical setting is highly desirable. Applications will be accepted and reviewed as received.
