Clinical Ethics Fellowship

Objective: Sutter Health Bay Area’s Program in Medicine and Human Values (PMHV) based at California Pacific Medical Center (CPMC), San Francisco, CA, offers an exciting opportunity for a clinical ethics fellowship. The goal of the fellowship is to provide an intensive practical training in clinical ethics consultation in a large community hospital with a diverse multi-cultural patient population. The focus of this fellowship is to train fellows with the skills and experience required for clinical ethics consultation in a health care setting. This fellowship program is the ideal training opportunity to acquire skills required in a clinical ethicist/ethics consultant and covers the ASBH’s Core Competencies for Healthcare Ethics Consultations. It is expected that by the completion of the fellowship, the fellow will be able to proficiently conduct clinical ethics consultations. The candidate is expected to have a solid academic knowledge of bioethics coming into the fellowship, as this program is not intended to be an academic exposure to bioethics.
Program: The Clinical Ethics Fellow will work under the supervision of the Senior Bioethicist. The Clinical Ethics Fellowship includes the following components:
a. Clinical Ethics Consultation
b. Clinical Ethics Documentation
c. Discussion of clinical ethics issues as they arise in the course of an active clinical case
d. Participation in Clinical Ethics Rounds
e. Participation in the Medical Center’s Ethics Committee
f. Participation in the Program’s education and teaching activities at the Medical Center
g. Assist with Policy development
h. Participation in monthly Journal Club
i. Opportunity to observe the functioning of other Sutter Bay Area hospitals’ ethics committees
j. Completion of a research project under the guidance of the Program’s Fellowship Advisory Committee.
Requirements: Candidates are required to have an advanced degree in Bioethics or Health Care Ethics, preferably a Doctorate or a Master’s degree.

Compensation: A competitive salary with excellent benefits will be offered for this position. Candidates must have legal authorization to work in the United States.
