DIRECTOR OF THE CENTER FOR ETHICS AND HUMANITIES IN THE LIFE SCIENCES
The College of Human Medicine at Michigan State University invites applications for the Director of the Center for Ethics and Humanities in the Life Sciences (hereafter, “the Center”). The position will be at the level of professor with tenure.
The Center is a cross-university resource with an interdisciplinary mission. The Center is committed to supporting reflective practice in health care and in science, by bringing to these fields the resources of ethics and humanities. The Center’s core faculty members aim to understand social, ethical, policy and practice challenges while analyzing crucial ethical questions in biomedical and life sciences that impact varied aspects of the human condition including advances in neurosciences and their clinical applications, big data research methods and biobanking, clinical ethics consultation, shared decision-making, and addressing the social determinants of health. The more recent developments in medicine and health in the field of “omics” and genome editing have created ever-more challenging bioethical considerations and highlight the need for a robust Center for Ethics. The Center also plays a key role in the College of Human Medicine’s Shared Discovery Curriculum, ensuring that students graduate with a deep understanding of the social context in which health care is practiced. To address this rapidly expanding bioethics landscape, and also to meet its many teaching responsibilities, The Center highly values the collaborative support from within as well as outside of the University. In keeping with the mission of the Center, a number of partnerships, memberships, and programs have been created in effort to further community understanding and involvement in bioethics. Faculty in the Center are continually working to establish and maintain international partnerships that build connections and collaborations with the larger bioethics community. (Please visit the Center website for more information: http://www.bioethics.msu.edu/homepage).
The Center Director will report to the Dean of the College of Human Medicine and will combine administrative leadership of the Center with a continued pursuit of an interdisciplinary robust program in biomedical ethics.
Applicants must have a PhD, MD, MD/PhD or JD with a proven track record of excellence in bioethics and academic impact. Applications are encouraged from ethicists, medical humanists and social science scholars who actively conduct research in interdisciplinary areas of biomedicine and life sciences. The successful candidate will have a compelling vision for the development of the Center, experience in acquiring external research funding, and a world-class record of publication in ethics and administrative experience.
Teaching opportunities will exist for the successful candidate. Salary and benefits are competitive. All application materials must be submitted electronically to the Michigan State University applicant tracking system at careers.msu.edu and refer to posting #516219. Required materials include a current CV; a cover letter that includes the applicant’s (a) vision for a center of this kind (no more than 2 pages) and (b) experience and qualifications pertinent to the position (no more than 1 page); and a list of at least three references (references will not be contacted without prior notification to the applicant). To be included in the initial review process, applications must be received by June 1, 2020, though the position will remain open until it is filled.
