UPMC Presbyterian is a renowned center for organ transplantation, and a recognized leader in cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery, critical care medicine and trauma services, and neurosurgery. UPMC Presbyterian also is designated as a Level I Regional Resource Trauma Center.
This position is full-time Monday through Friday, working daylight hours. Occasional on-call may be needed.
In this role, you will provide consultative services for a wide range of ethical disputes related to patient care, including informed consent, surrogate decision making, goals of care, organ donation, and medical futility. You will provide information, education, and recommendations to physicians, nurses, patients, and families on ethical issues. Additionally, you will guide and recommend hospital polices related to ethical patient care. You will act as a leader on our hospital ethics committee, as well as supervising on-call ethicists and trainees in the department. In the course of your work, you will also collect, analyze, and report quality improvement data about our ethics programs.
• Clarifies issues and generates options for resolution. Facilitates assessment of the pros and cons of possible options. Consults with managers and clinical staff to develop collaborative strategies for conflict resolution.
• Expert, specialized focus on clinical ethics consultation training. Develop, implement and execute education trainings and in services on ethical situations and resolution to key care team members, including consultation providers. Collaboration and development of processes and education around ethical situations with Center for Bioethics & Health Law University of Pittsburgh.
• Facilitates family meetings to enhance communication among physicians and other health care providers, patients, and families.
• Formulates, manages, and monitors the overall goals, direction, programs, and impact of all programs and service offered.
• Identifies any potential legal or risk management concerns and alerts the appropriate individuals.
• Participate actively on the multi-disciplinary team and contributes to patient planning. Interprets to members of the team the significance of the patient wishes and values pertaining to their medical treatment. Offers timely advice about ethical patient care.
• Provides ethics consultative services to clinical staff, patients, and families.
• Provides on-going education to nursing and other staff in effective conflict resolution and ethical decision making.
• Responsible for recommending communication and mediation methods by which staff can effectively resolve ethical conflicts.
• Reviews periodically the patterns of ethical conflicts and makes appropriate recommendations for policies or practices to reduce or eliminate recurring conflicts.
• Serves as a resource for medical, nursing, and other staff to increase awareness of ethical issues present within patient care.
• Tracks and reports on the number and type of cases received.
• Masters degree in ethics required.
• Formal clinical ethics rotation or fellowship strongly preferred.
• Doctorate in ethics or related field preferred.
• Advanced knowledge of medical ethics principles and practices required.
• Minimum of 1 year experience providing clinical ethics consultation required.
• Acute care hospital experience preferred.
• Must demonstrate outstanding communication skills and be able to communicate effectively with individuals at all levels of UPMC as well as with people of different cultures.
• Must demonstrate excellent problem-solving skills and be able to gather information, organize and analyze it as necessary, and help develop appropriate options and actions.
