The ethics of drug addiction research in China (Global Bioethics Blog)

Question: would it be ethical to conduct research with drug user detainees in such circumstances? In the abstract, those with substance abuse problems are vulnerable persons in poor health, and it would be good to have research on effective interventions to combat drug addiction. But in practice, it gets complicated.

Obama's medicalization of America's war on drugs (SF Gate)

President Obama’s drug czar, Gil Kerlikowske, doesn’t like the term “drug war.” He argues that none of the smart guys in law enforcement uses it. Instead, the smart guys talk about middle-of-the-road strategies that emphasize treatment over incarceration – as did both Presidents Richard Nixon and George W. Bush – while they also advocate tough law enforcement.
