Dear Professional Organizations,

Being an active member of my profession is important for both my personal mission and my professional career. I enjoy coming to your meetings and finding myself among those who speak my scholarly language. At such gatherings I learn about new ideas, network with current, former and potentially new collaborators, and sometimes (when looking) find out about new opportunities for jobs, funding, and publishing. And yes, my university expects me to attend these events in order to share my work, to network, and to help with increasing the visibility and reputation of the institution.…

As national funding decreased in recent decades, medical research suffered. Progress toward uncovering beneficial preventative and therapeutic treatments slowed for thousands of devastating conditions, affecting the health, happiness, and life expectancy of millions of Americans. Young scientists trying to enter the biomedical research arena last year faced the worst funding climate in half a century, with NIH spending down 22% since 2003. December of 2015 brought a glimmer of hope, however, when Congress passed a federal spending bill that included the biggest increase in NIH funding in 12 years, an additional $2 billion that NIH Director Francis Collins says came at “just the right time to take advantage of remarkable opportunities to improve human health, powered by dramatic advances in scientific knowledge and technological innovation.”
Today might be considered “rare” because it is a Leap Day.…

Hashtag Advocacy or Slacktivism: How Should We Evaluate the Impact of Social Media Campaigns for Public Health? Mon, 31 Aug 2015 12:00:25 +0000 by Macey L. Henderson, J.D.

It takes more than a TV news story or a Twitter hashtag campaign to save lives. Last August’s viral ice bucket challenge did more than just improve public health awareness of an issue. Its now been reported to have made a real impact into research for a rare disease, not just for improved public education and awareness.

An estimated 5,000 persons receive a diagnosis of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) each year in the United States, with an estimated prevalence of 12,000 cases according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).…

The Price of Academic Freedom Wed, 26 Aug 2015 19:31:03 +0000 by Craig Klugman, Ph.D.

Alice Dreger resigned from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine/Memorial Hospital this week. The slash is because last year the hospital and the medical school merged. For the Medical Humanities & Bioethics program at Northwestern, that has meant a tumultuous year as it is readjusted to the new landscape.

Alice Dreger is a medical historian and advocate. Her position at the Medical Humanities & Bioethics program at Northwestern was a part-time, non-tenure track faculty member at Northwestern.…

Defending Bioethics in the Job Market Tue, 29 Apr 2014 06:09:08 +0000 By Keisha Ray, PhD

I am a junior scholar who is currently on the job market, hoping to secure a faculty position as a bioethicist. I have been consumed by this task for over a year now. I have done phone interviews, video-chat interviews riddled with technological hiccups, and grueling and exhausting on-campus interviews. I have worked and reworked my curriculum vitae and cover letters, I have paid a lot of money to send my 150-page dossier to hundreds of schools, and I have spent a lot of money on traveling to universities for on-campus interviews.…
