Jonah Rubin nicely connects two seemingly unrelated controversial social-medical issues: abortion and brain death. While they center at opposite ends of life’s spectrum, the underlying issue is the same.
What is life? Does it begin at conception? When the heart forms? When the fetus can survive outside the mother? Analogously, when does life end? When the person is permanently unconscious? When all functions of the entire brain irreversibly stop? Or only when circulatory and respiratory function irreversibly stop?
