Idan Azrad suffered a traumatic head injury when he was struck while riding his bike near Ottawa. The 27-year-old was rushed to the Ottawa Hospital where he was later determined dead by neurologic criteria. (CTV)

The family rejects the diagnosis and is fighting to keep him on organ support. The Azrads are a devoutly religious Orthodox Jewish family, who say according to Jewish religious laws, death only occurs when the heart stops beating.

The Ontario courts have repeatedly confronted this issue over the past few years. One case is still pending before the Court of Appeal.
