In the United States there are two key methods (exit options) to avoid living in late stage dementia: (1) stop eating and drinking while you still have capacity (VSED), or (2) complete an advance directive to stop hand feeding when you are unable to feed yourself (AD by SED).


As her dementia started to progress, Jean Rough used VSED on June 22, 2019 in Washington State. (While MAID is legally available in WA, Jean did not qualify since she was not terminally ill.) Her husband Jim describes their planning in this 30-minute interview.
