The Victoria Voluntary Assisted Dying Act 2017 came into effect on June 19, 2019.

For the past year, Victorians who are at the end of life and who meet strict eligibility criteria can request access to voluntary assisted dying (VAD), elsewhere called medical aid in dying (MAID). One physician offers some reflections on successes and challenged during the first year.

Western Australia has already followed Victoria in enacting a VAD law. Queensland or Tasmania may be next. Those newer bills are poised to remove some unnecessary access barriers in the Vic and WA laws.
