Georgetown University is seeking an experienced and committed archivist to build and curate archival collections in the Bioethics Research Library (BRL) of the Kennedy Institute of Ethics. BRL, a destination for bioethics scholars from around the world, provides essential resources for the study of bioethics – both historical and contemporary -- covering ethical, legal, public policy and social aspects of advances in medicine, science, and technology. BRL contains an archival collection documenting the development of the field, including a repository of materials from National Bioethics Commissions, as well as the world’s largest bioethics collection of over 100,000 books.

The Archivist/Reference Librarian will make the archival materials broadly accessible and will have the opportunity to develop new collections from founding figures in the field of bioethics. He or she will develop collaborative relationships within the University to support teaching, learning, research, and will participate in outreach and programming to engage students, faculty, and staff with primary source material in bioethics.

The Archivist/Reference Librarian reports to the Associate University Librarian, Scholarly Resources and Services in the Georgetown University Library who consults closely with the Director of the Kennedy Institute of Ethics on matters relating to BRL. The Archivist/Reference Librarian will work with librarians, archivists, and staff at the Georgetown University Library; faculty, staff, and visiting researchers at the Kennedy Institute of Ethics; and students and others who use the Bioethics Research Library.

Job responsibilities include:

- Preserving, processing, and developing the archival collections of the Bioethics Research Library

- Providing reference service for archival and circulating collections in the Bioethics Research Library

- Working with the Director of the Kennedy Institute of Ethics to develop, cultivate, and steward relationships with donors

- Supporting bioethics program development


- An ALA-accredited MLS with emphasis on archives (or experience equivalent to an archives concentration).

- Minimum 2 years of professional experience working in a special collections or archival repository, preferably in a university environment.

- Experience providing reference and research services, preferably in a university environment.

- A firm understanding of archival theory and practice, including national standards for archival materials, such as DACS and EAD; working knowledge of ArchivesSpace or other archival

- Demonstrated ability to work individually and collaboratively in a team environment

- Excellent organizational skills, accuracy, and attention to detail

- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills

- Ability to meet strict deadlines

Preferred Qualifications

- Interest in the field of bioethics

- Experience processing large archival collections

- Experience working on archival digitization projects

- Experience providing reference service to faculty and visiting researchers

- Experience hiring and supervising students

- Proven success in fundraising and/or obtaining grants
