The Department of Bioethics (DoB) at the Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) School of Medicine invites applications for the position of Clinical Ethicist in the Center for Biomedical Ethics (CBME) at MetroHealth System (MHS) in Cleveland, OH. MHS is Cuyahoga County’s safety-net hospital with almost 1.5 million patient visits per year and is home to the county’s most experienced Level 1 Trauma Center, Ohio’s only adult and pediatric verified burn center, and Cleveland’s first clinic dedicated to serving the LGBT community. MHS provides medical care at the Cuyahoga County Corrections Center and is the county’s medical home for children in foster care. The CBME has a longstanding history of outstanding service, education, and research. Its clinical ethics consult service is very active, almost doubling its number of consults in the past year. The CBME also maintains vigorous educational programming, including monthly hospital-wide ethics presentations as well as monthly nursing and dentistry ethics lectures, and it welcomes masters students, medical students, and fellows as observers and participants. The CBME’s nationally and internationally recognized faculty have expertise in clinical ethics consultation, burn ethics, correctional health care ethics, and medical facilitation.

Applicants must have a graduate degree, terminal degree (PhD, JD, MD, DO, etc.) preferred but not required, at the time of appointment. The successful candidate will have a strong record of clinical ethics consultation with sufficient experience to oversee an active 24/7 consult service, in addition to being an outstanding clinical educator, excellent communicator, and motivated collaborator.

This position will be based at MHS, but there will be some opportunities for participation in the DoB, which has teaching programs at the undergraduate, graduate, and medical school levels. The successful candidate will begin work ideally in fall 2019 and will be appointed as an Instructor.

CWRU is located in the University Circle area of Cleveland, Ohio. Cleveland is a vibrant, culturally rich, re-emerging city, recently named one of the top 15 best places to live in the US (www.timeout.com). University Circle itself is home to world-renowned cultural institutions such as the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Museum of Natural History, Cleveland Institute of Music, the Cleveland Botanical Garden, the Milton and Tamar Maltz Performing Arts Center, and the stunning Cleveland Cultural Gardens, which celebrate the ethnic richness of the city's history. University Circle is also the home of two world-class health care institutions, The Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals of Cleveland, and the nation's third largest VA, The Louis Stokes Veterans Administration Medical Center.
