Montefiore Medical Center and Albert Einstein College of Medicine Bioethics Fellowship

The Montefiore Einstein Bioethics Fellowship is a competitive one-year clinical ethics fellowship with opportunities for mentored scholarship and teaching.  The Fellowship, now in its third year, aims to prepare its graduates for careers in bioethics consultation and bioethics education.

Fellows will engage in high-level study of bioethics with both self-driven academic curriculum and in situ learning. Fellows will spend the bulk of their training learning to perform ethics consultation in real-time in the setting of our high-volume service. By the completion of the fellowship, fellows will be equipped to conduct ethics consultation independently and will have sufficient hours and training to qualify for the Health Care Ethics Consultation (HCEC) certification exam.  Fellows will participate in bioethics case conferences, will sit on the institution’s bioethics committee, and will deliver presentations to the clinical ethics community.

Applicants will have a terminal degree in a related field, including medicine, nursing, social work, psychology, philosophy, religious studies, or law.  Preference will be given to applicants with strong clinical experience. Applicants should have strong interpersonal skills, excellent written and oral communication skills, and the ability to work and learn independently and collaboratively.  Completed applications should be submitted as soon as possible and no later than July 15; note that we will fill the position when we find a suitable candidate.  The starting date for the fellowship is August 1, 2021.

The fellowship includes a competitive salary and is full-time with benefits. Please contact the Center for Bioethics at bioethics@montefiore.org  for more information. Applicants should forward their CV, a letter of interest, and a writing sample to bioethics@montefiore.org with “Montefiore Einstein Bioethics Fellowship” in the subject line.

FAQ

Is there an application for the fellowship? No, there is no formal application. Applicants should send their CV, a letter of interest and a writing sample to bioethics@montefiore.org.

Could you provide more information about the writing sample? The optimal writing sample would be on a topic in bioethics and a few typed pages in length; it will be written solely by the author and will not be a co-authored work. It need not have been published, though if applicants have publications we hope to see these listed in their cv. We don’t expect applicants to create a sample specifically for this purpose. This example of your written work should demonstrate clear communication skills in English; if the topic is in bioethics that will be a plus.

Is there a cut-off date for applications? We will accept applications until we have selected a candidate. The response to this posting has been enthusiastic and we hope to make an offer within weeks, not months.

When is the start date? We are seeking a candidate who can start work as soon as possible after August  1, 2021.  The onboarding process takes approximately 1 week to complete. The end date for the fellowship will be roughly one year later.

What percent of time will be spent on the consultation service, versus teaching or scholarship? Our goal is to provide sufficient experience and training to make the fellow capable of providing independent bioethics consultations. We can be somewhat flexible depending on the fellow’s interests and experience regarding teaching and scholarship.
