Providence is calling a Senior Ethicist to the Center for Ethics Department at Providence Saint Vincent Medical Center in Portland , OR. This is a full-time (1.0 FTE), day shift position.

We are seeking a Senior Ethicist that will promote the field of clinical ethics through clinical ethics consultation, education, scholarship, innovative research, and the development of exemplary learning practices, particularly in the area of clinical and organizational ethics education and consultation. This position is actively engaged in bringing ethics to bear on larger healthcare issues that face society and the ministry. The Senior Ethicist manages some of the day to day operations for the Center for Ethics and plays an important role in the development, implementation and evaluation of primarily those programs related to clinical and organizational ethics. In addition, the Senior Ethicist will serve as a resource across the Oregon Region on matters related to healthcare ethics, palliative medicine and cultural competency education, especially as they pertain to patient care, medical education, policy development, and organizational decisions. This position may also provide information and support across the entire Health System.

In this position you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership across the Oregon Region within the context of the Center’s ethics services
  • Possibly play a critical role in consultation and education across the PH&S system
  • Actively participates in the development, implementation, and evaluation of policies and procedures guiding the organization in ethical decision-making and discernment
  • Act as a consultant to patients and providers, providing support when facing difficult decisions about medical treatment and appropriate care plans
  • Participate in the design and implementation of a comprehensive, targeted and integrated educational program for ethics
  • Provide and facilitates appropriate educational and developmental learning in areas of health care ethics (clinical/organizational) to various groups throughout the Region. Serves on various educational committees and events for a variety of constituents, including patients, families, providers, and public
  • Provide for ongoing research and educational materials
  • Engage and promotes scholarly research in areas of health care ethics
  • Actively participates in appropriate community and national professional organizations and networks in areas of ethics


Required qualifications for this position includes:

  • Doctorate Degree (Ph.D) in Moral Theology/Ethics or related discipline with expertise in healthcare ethics -OR- MD/DO, NP, JD, PharmD, DNSc or similar with masters level work in healthcare ethics
  • Background in organizational ethics or related fields
  • Experience with healthcare and social traditions of the Catholic Church
  • Five (5) years of Clinical experience as ethicist in a health care or related organization, including academic institutions.
  • Possesses a record as a teaching scholar with an expertise in ethics, mentor and colleague with a clear commitment to enhancing the distinctive mission and quality
  • Experience in curriculum development and teaching, research and writing and professional presentation.

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Master’s level experience.
